Mouth Hacks ep 23
    Introduction
    Andrew

They said it would never happen: combining flossing and toothbrushing and do a single experience. But the pencil pointers in Norelco must've missed the memo, because their new Waterpik fusion does just that and friends, I'm here to tell you that I've tried it and it's every bit as transformative as it sounds. Today I sit down with Katie Franklin, the projects, chief scientist. This is Mouth Hacks.

    Interview Starts

Katie Franklin. Welcome to Mouth Hacks.

    Katy

    Thanks for having me.

    Andrew

All right. Now, before we get into it just tell me, where did you get this idea from?

    Katy

I've always felt that great inspiration can come from anywhere, geysers waterparks, squirt guns have always been a great inspiration for me. I've always just, I had this drive to bring that kind of natural water pressure into mouth care.

    Andrew

So the Waterpik it's been around for a while. I totally get it. Just as good as flossing, but combining it with a toothbrush, where did that come from?

    Katy

You know that the toothbrush honestly, it also came from an actual inspiration. It came from my cat, you know, I watched my cat licking herself, and I saw that sort of combination of that pressure liquid plus the bristly texture of the cat's tongue. That was the thing that really inspired me to combine those two into one really revolutionary project. I'm not afraid to say it a revolutionary project.

    Andrew

And you shouldn't be. Now working at a big conglomerate like Norelco, this multi-billion dollar company, there must have been a lot of institutional hurdles to get something so disruptive out the door. I'm sure the big suits when they heard this the first time they must have laughed you out of the room. How did you get this through?
