Good morning. If you're here to talk about B2B writing, you're in the right place. My name is Sarah Griesenbrock, founder of the B2B writing Institute. And I'll share my story in just a minute, but I've been a freelance writer since 2013, specializing in B2B. Around that time as well. And I believe B2B is what allowed me to ramp up my business so quickly, double my income after two maternity leaves, get to six figures and then double that and just do all these wonderful things in my freelance writing career.
And so that's why we're here and why we're talking about this amazing subject today. But before we even get into how I got here, or even what B2B is, I really love to introduce everybody to why B2B. So why is this happening? Why are so many people moving into B2B and really specializing their freelance business there?
And here's a thought exercise that's really resonated with people because. I think for most of us normal people, the first thing B to B asks us to do is to stop shopping with our own wallet and start shopping with someone else's wallet, which is on a completely different scale in the clients and B2B.
So if you want to close your eyes or just zone out and look somewhere. Picture of $30,000 in your mind. So we have this amount of $30,000 and whatever that means to you in your family. So that might be half a year's. Very family a very hefty mortgage on a nice house in my area, at least. And that's what companies regularly spend on white papers it'd be to be.
So I write for a multi-million dollar media company where this is all they do. They create 20 to $30,000 white papers and sell those to B2B companies. And what is really amazing about that because it's not just about the big numbers. What's amazing about that is that it's actually worth it. That's a good investment in being.
Because that is how those companies get their products in front of people who want to buy it, the executive audience. And that's an example of how this whole world of business is out there that we usually just don't hear about because we've been more on the B2C side of things and that is called B2B writing.
So to the average person, The 30,000 is like a down payment on a house, but that's a good investment in a white paper that you can go straight and get a percentage of that fee to the average person, maybe $15,000. That's a nest egg and a few months savings, but to a B2B company, that's the average reported budget per month for content, according to the content marketing Institute, 2020 state of B2B marketing.
So just the idea that there is this. Budget set aside to pay writers for this kind of content. So all we have to do is jump in and learn to love it. Then finally to the average person, $3,000 is like a month's worth of work or a salary into a B2B company. That's a rounding error and the annual marketing budget, which is almost $200,000.
And that's the budget that you're supporting whenever you are in. A B2B writing capacity. So there's opportunity in B2B there's demand for talented writers, but it's up to us to learn about the business side of things and the marketing side of things so that we can make the most of what we're doing.
So if we haven't met before, my name is Sarah founder of the B2B writing Institute, but I was not always immersed in the world of business.
