My name is Steve Rubin and I am a software engineer. The original reason that I started to work on Descript was basically, I was building research prototypes of like new media editing tools in grad school. I was really excited about the idea of building creative tools to just make people's lives better in various ways. All of the engineers, to the extent that they want to be are like, fully involved in the general iteration of the product. The engineers are always kind of an integral part of the design process, like, as you're building something ,really interrogating, like, "Does this thing make sense? How could this thing be better? Is this addressing the use cases that we're trying to target?" All that kind of stuff, we're just constantly doing that as engineers. One thing that I think is different about Descript than a lot of other tech companies, is that what we're building is a completely new paradigm. Because the kind of fundamental building blocks of our whole media editor are very different from anything else that exists, it's not just saying, "Let's implement it, so it works similar to how that other software works." It feels like in a lot of ways we've been carving our own niche.
