hi. I'm Ziggy Severino. I'm 18. I went to Mossman High School. I used to come to the youth center quite frequently, almost every day.
Um, I, uh, I'm a volunteer at a wombat sanctuary. Love, love that. It's probably my passion. Um, I love arts. I love creating things, but I really love being outside in nature and the bush and it's great..
I probably started coming to the youth center in 2017 when I was in year seven. I was coming here probably every second day, if not every day. Me and all my friends would hang out here. I was a part of a volunteer group. The food? Oh yeah, food. Uh, the food one. Yeah. Yeah. The fresh, fresh, fresh. Yeah. I loved fresh. Yeah. Uh, I met a lot of my friends here, some of them I'm still friends with today.
Mm. Um, and it's, it's. Great. It was a great environment to be in, especially just like all the people here, people that worked here. Everyone's super lovely. For me, I think it was just a really safe environment to be in. I felt very comfortable here. I always felt like I could be myself when I was surrounded by the people that were here. Um, also just so many great opportunities, so many fun things to do.
And yeah, it was just amazing ,.,Having a space for people my age. Where you just felt supported.
Okay. Yeah, of course. Um, it's called Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary.
And I, I mostly work with the Joeys, so the younger wombats. I do a lot of bottle feeding, early mornings, a lot of, a lot of cleaning. Um, but it's really rewarding work. Um, I also help organize other volunteers to come other groups.
Um, And I also, uh, just like spread awareness about the species and the struggles that they're facing right now, because yeah, they definitely need our help.
Okay. So I started in the end of 2019. Um, and it was actually very random how I started because my, my dad went on long service leave and he really just loves Australian animals. He's not from Australia, so he's just like, ah, this is my passion. Um, and he was like, oh, do you wanna come visit this place with me one day?
And I was like, sure, why not? Um, and then we were walking around having a great time, having a tour of the sanctuary and it was a very, very hot day. And I was wearing all black clothing because I'm me. And it was, and I actually fainted and I passed out. Oh. Um, and then, uh, the. The organizer of the sanctuary, the woman who owns it, she kind of took me inside and she was, uh, she just took care of me and she just felt really bad.
